Why Is It Important To Learn Self Defence?

By Mukhzani Mustaffa

Why is it important to learn self defence? Just buy a pepper spray, stun gun or even a gun. Use these instead of having to spend hours of time trying to learn self defence techniques. You will get the same result minus the time 'wasted' trying to learn self defence techniques.

Let me give you a scenario. For example, you just took out your money from the bank. While walking back to your car. Suddenly someone stopped you and tries to rob you. But your pepper spray is all the way in your bag. By the time you try to reach for it, the robber snatch your bag and ran away with all your hard earn money. It might be worse, you got into a struggle with your attacker and he manages to get your pepper spray instead. Now you are in an even worse situation.

Then one might say if you are getting robbed, don't fight back, just give him whatever he wants. Well, it's totally true but there are some situations where you might need to respond. For example, you just took out your money to pay for your son's medical bill that has recently been diagnosed with leukemia. Do you just want to hand over your money to the robber?

What if you have just finished your night shift and on the way back home, you got jumped by your attacker. The attacker is not just interested in your money, but intends to rape you too. You are being bullied and the person bullying you gets carried away and starts punching you in the face. Of course you want to dodge his punches and pushes him away.

In situation like these, I think we can agree that knowing any sort of self defence technique is really important. If you are in these situations, you really need to know how to protect yourselves or your loved ones. But the goal is, to defend and get out of trouble in the shortest time possible. Do not prolong the fight, respond and run away.

Most people don't want to learn any self defence technique because they think it will consume a lot of time. Well it's true. But only if you want to be Jackie Chan or some sort of mma fighter. The goal is, to have the reflex and technique to respond to your attacker and run away from danger as soon as possible. If someone grabs you from behind, you need to know how to break free and get away as soon as possible.

All you need is to spend 10-15 minutes 2-3 times per week, or better yet spend 30-40 minutes once or twice per week and substitute it with you weekly routine cardio exercises. That is all the time you need to build up your confidence and reflex.

However, as long as you can defend yourself or your loved ones it really doesn't matter how you do it. If you really don't see yourself spending some time learning self defence technique, just get yourself any self defence product but make sure you always bring it with you. You can learn self defence technique and have self defence tools too. Pick which one is most comfortable for you.
