How To Fight vs Self Defense

By Steve Kragen

If you found this article, you are probably a good, decent person who wants to learn how to fight to keep himself or herself safe from the bad guys. Maybe you're a parent who wants to make sure that nothing happens to your kids when you're around.

I congratulate you on this desire. It is healthy and natural to want to learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones. However, I'd like to talk first about the philosophy of self defense.

Is Self Defense Real?

Hollywood has its own ideas of what learning how to fight is all about. Something like Jackie Chan might pop into your mind. You'll learn how to jump, flip, and kick, all the while making funny faces and having the audience laughing. At the end, you end up with the woman of your dreams. Maybe you've even made peace with your once mortal enemy. Everyone is happy and you ride off into the sunset.

For the females out there, you probably have a more dangerous situation come to mind. Maybe you're out on a walk with your baby to the park. Suddenly you notice that someone has been following you for the past few blocks. It's time to put on your Alias persona. You jump onto a tree branch above you and wrap your legs around the bad guy's neck, choking him to the ground. You get on your cell to law enforcement and they pick up your attacker. You saved the day!

All of this sounds nice, and could potentially happen in real life. The problem is that usually it doesn't.

How to Fight For Real

Your jump flip, kick and funny face like Jackie Chan might land in the bad guy's stomach, making him groan in pain and double over. But now he's mad. Maybe he reaches in his pocket and pull out a knife. For the ladies, the guy you kicked that was attacking you in the elevator you might have dazed, but more than likely he's back up now and more upset and ready to have his way with you.

Now what are you going to do?

You are now in a literal life or death situation. Movie time is over. One of you is going to walk away from this in their current state of health and the other is not. At this terrible but possible moment, you have to be able to put the other person out of commission.

Now you must ask yourself a very tough question. If this situation happened today, would you be able to render this person unconscious, crippled or even deceased if the situation called for it? Would you know what to do to make that happen?

Why We Must Learn How to Fight

It's an unfortunate reality that these are skills that we as responsible, good citizens should have to keep ourselves safe from those who would prey on us. We never want to use these skills, but we must have them to call upon when needed. For ourselves and for those we love.

Now, you may think that these skills are reserved for black belts and judo masters. The good news is that there is a very fast and effective way to learn these skills using movements you already know, like stomping and elbowing. You don't need to know a bunch of fancy techniques to be able to take out an opponent in a real life or death situation.

Why would I say you don't need a lot of training? You just have to target the right spots on your opponent. For example, how would it feel if you fell with your knees onto your attacker's throat? See how it could be very easy to make it so that attacker can't hurt you anymore? You just have to aim and fire at the right places on his body!
