Extreme San Diego: What To Do & Where To Go

By Rod Bourgoine

If the typical day sunbathing at the beach or visiting a museum sounds dull to you, you might be the type of person that enjoys activities that are a bit more thrilling and extreme. San Diego is the perfect place for people who enjoy more rugged adventures that the usual day playing golf or a sedate whale watching cruise. Here are a few suggestions of the types of extreme activities that are available in the San Diego area.

With such proximity to the ocean, there are many excellent options for water sports, from parasailing to waterskiing to scuba diving. La Jolla has some fascinating sea caves and several companies offer kayaking adventures in and around the caves. Cliff jumping in La Jolla is also a popular activity for extremists, but it is important to note that while there are some great jumps, the sport itself is illegal. If these suggestions sound too pedestrian, you could opt to try something fun like open ocean shark dives. Typically you will be swimming with Blue sharks and Makos, and while the latter can be aggressive, you probably will be perfectly safe in your shark-resistant cage.

There are some great surf spots in the area, and the best waves are found at places such as Trestles, which is located in the northern edge of San Diego County. Black's Beach is another surfing hot spot to consider. Of course, if you really want to get extreme and ride some of the world's biggest waves, consider a trip out to the Cortes Bank. It's about 100 miles off the coast, but this tow-out surf spot boasts waves as big as you'd find at Waimea Bay or Maverick's.

You don't have to just stay by the water to enjoy some extreme fun. There are plenty of adventures to enjoy up in the air. Combine the fun of flying and the ocean by renting a jetpack and soaring as high as 30 feet above the ocean and then diving into the waves. There are quite a few excellent skydiving centers in the county for those wishing to truly experience a death-defying activity. You can even go on a fighter jet experience and take part in dog fighting maneuvers. While you won't actually be shot at, the planes are authentic fighter jets and the stunt flying is as real as it gets without actually being in combat.

While mountain climbers won't find in tall peaks to climb in the San Diego area, there are some cool bouldering and rock climbing options. Mt. Woodsen, for example, offers hundreds of boulders and it's a great place for practice and training. Mission Gorge is another climbing hot spot, and this one is located in Mission Trails Regional Park. There are also indoor rock climbing facilities throughout San Diego.

For those who love adventurous activities, they probably would not be satisfied with working out an ordinary fitness center. San Diego also offers The Arena MMs, one of the country's top MMA gyms, where you can train alongside professional MMA fighters and hone your skills in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, Judo and more. In addition, you can workout at The Arena's CrossFit gym or consider taking part in their own custom training program called FightBuilt, which will have you ready to enter a cage and take on an opponent in no time at all.
