What Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi?

By Jazzi George

A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi is basically the uniform worn by those who practice Bijj during their training and is also referred to as "The bijj Kimono". Generally, these uniforms are either white or blue, but they are also available in black. These uniforms are famous for their rigidity, and because it is extremely difficult to destroy them during the training sessions.

It is extremely important to make sure that the uniform is made entirely out of cotton before purchasing it. You shouldn't buy anything unless you make sure that the product is indeed 100% cotton. Such uniforms are very light, or extremely heavy, but you may encounter difficulties in making a difference between these two concepts, because these days most Gi products available in stores are defined as Pearls, or Platinum. However, lighter uniforms are those currently known as Pearl Weave or Single Weave, while the heavy ones can have names such as Gold Weave or Double Weave.

However, the weight of the kimono does not make any difference during the training, and it is just an insignificant characteristic. What is more, the professionals claim that the heavier kimonos are the best option for the competitions, whereas the lighter ones are more suitable for the personal trainings, and you might want to consider this fact when you make your choice. Once you've decided to start learning Bijj, you should look for a high-quality Jiu Jitsu Gi. Also, these uniforms are dissimilar from those used in karate, and they rather resemble those worn by the Judo specialists. Gis are usually ultra-durable because this sport usually implies submissions and throws, so the uniform must be able to deal with impressive amounts of force. Gis usually present flawless, durable stitches that enable them to remain intact even after the harshest trainings.

That's why the uniforms have to be high-quality and use double or even triple stitches. Yet, if you are learning just how to defense yourself, things change. Then, you could just as well train a pair of trousers and a T-shirt because it is very unlikely for you to be attacked while wearing a fancy Bijj uniform. Also, there are professionals who claim that if you train only while wearing a Gi can be unsafe, mainly on long periods of time, because you will focus more on your uniform, using it as shield, and you will put less emphasis on the actual techniques. It is much more advisable to balance things, and find a middle way, as it will surely do you better. If you wear your uniform during all the trainings, you may become weaker, instead of growing stronger, because you will be used to rely exclusively on your uniform.

On the other hand, not wearing a gi is also a bad decision because you won't develop the ability of using defense techniques that are based on the material. These being said, you should keep in mind that Gis are fabulous uniforms, and that they are necessary for all those who practice Bijj, because they are the key of a successful training. And it does not matter if you practice Bijj for pleasure, or to learn how to defense yourself, as you will certainly find it useful.
